Today is Halloween, and it’s time to get spooky. Did you know that NC’s coast has a checkered past full of ghost stories. If you like learning about local folklore, then a number of these haunted places are just a short drive from our campground.

Did you know that legend has it that the town of Bath is cursed?! A few hundred years ago, a traveling evangelist named George Whitefield cursed the town of Bath for sending him away. From then on, the once prosperous town began to lose more and more business, making many locals claim that the curse had worked.

Bath is full of legends and stories. In fact, there’s another popular tale about darkness in Bath. In 1802, a mysterious horseman showed up to town and challenged a local man to a horseback race. Towards the end of the race, the local man’s horse dug his feet into the ground, lurching the man into the air and instantly killing him. It’s said that the horse’s hoof prints can still be seen to this day.

Blackbeard is one of history’s most famous pirates, and he loved to loot along the shores of North Carolina. For this reason, many believe that Blackbeard’s ghost haunts the NC coast, especially in the spot called Teach’s Hole along Ocracoke’s shores. Some have reported seeing a strange light under the water along with visions of Blackbeard swimming and searching for his lost head.
